Summary/Abstract: Mikołaj Rej’s “Źwierzyniec” first published 1562 significantly influenced development of the epigram in Poland. In the illustration devoted to the representation of the political elite of the time, contained in the “Rozdział wtóry” the “head” as a metaphor and metonymy is often listed. Rej made this part of the body the basis for reflection on the value system of representatives of the nobility. The “head” itself in the presented samples is considered as a source of thoughts, feelings and ingenium, and as a plane of reason and weakness at the same time. And it also brings less apparent associations. In the form of the metonymy the “head” functions as part pro toto and performs similar function to a metaphor – it represents a human being as a thinking subject and thus emphasizes his intellectual potential or is the center of thoughts and feelings of the portrayed character. The metaphor in “Źwierzyniec” is a testimony to Rej’s rich imagination. It also exposes his political views, but it is a reliable tool of parenesis showing the correct way of proceeding to the reader.
