Summary/Abstract: Between 1953 and 1958, Romanian-Soviet relations were marked by the failure of the Romanian leadership to take a firm stand and break away from the Soviet sphere of influence. The leaders of the Romanian Workers Party did their best to observe the recommendations and instructions they received from Moscow and to apply mechanically the same measures the Soviet Union applied. Significantly, despite a certain liberalization initiated by the new Kremlin leaders after Stalin’s death, the Romanian leaders still stuck to the Soviet model.
