Summary/Abstract: Gen. Charles de Gaulle, President of the French Republic, visited Romanian over May 14-18, 1968, the visit being reflected in the Romanian media - and later in the historiography of the Ceaușescu regime - as one of the events that sanctioned President Nicolae Ceaușescu’s international prestige while also enhancing his popularity at home. As the first visit to Romania by a French head of state and also the first visit by the leader of the major Western power after 1944, its symbolism was more evident than any practical effects it generated. Charles de Gaulle’s visit to Romania, the end of which was hastened by the outbreak of the student protests in Paris, brought Nicolae Ceaușescu the first invitation to pay an official visit to a big Western state. That visit took place in July 1970, when Georges Pompidou was President of France.
