Summary/Abstract: In the poem entitled A Dream, published in 1789 as part of the Songs of Innocence, William Blake describes the encounter of the speaker with an ant who fights with the world and himself to find the road back to his family. According to the fact that the root of this literary work originates from a dream, I drove the conclusion that the phenomena appearing in the poem might be related to some of the visions which Blake went through. The present study shows the analysis of the poem from a perspective based on the way humans perceive the universe while dreaming. The study also focuses on how the firefly helps the ant finding his way back home to his beloved ones. It is important to mention that the firefly appears on the scene because of the speaker’s tears dropped as a sign of pity for the lost ant. In The Interpretation of Dreams Freud states that while a person dreams, small things might get enlarged. The present study claims that the reason why the speaker did not fail to notice the ant’s presence and understood the words spelled by the insect can be explained by the enlargement of tiny aspects.
