The Role of Semantic Field in Image

Summary/Abstract: The text entitled The Role of Semantic Field in Images includes both basic and derived ideas connected with signs considered as graphic gesture used in images. Kulig uses his intuition in order to find out when freehand signs placed on surface can be interpreted as iconic signs, codes and as symbols. Also, he tries to find out in what conditions we can interpret particular signs. Kulig analyses the influence of surrounding areas of signs, surrounding semantic areas (and graphic gesture) and semantic fields on the meaning of signs. The text is based on a part of Kulig’s PhD thesis entitled Inscription – gestures as letters and symbols in pictures (2010).
