Summary/Abstract: Muhammad Hādī Maʿrifat is one of the leading figures of the modern tafsīr literature. His work on the history of tafsīr has the potential to be a seminal source for many studies. The present study aims to introduce Maʿrifat’s work entitled al-Tafsīr wa-l-mufassirūn fi sawbih al-kasīb with its different aspects and to discuss Shiʿite perspectives on the history of tafsīr based on this work. Maʿrifat wrote his book to correct the misinformation about Shiʿite commentaries and commentators that Muhammad Husayn al-Dhahabī provided in his work entitled al-Tafsīr wa-l-mufassirūn and to overcome the deficiencies in this work. Therefore, the present study compared the works of these authors in some respects. The examination of Ma‘rifat’s work revealed that he addressed tafsīr studies in six stages. He provided information about the stages that tafsīr had gone through. Then, adopting a Shiʿite lens, he introduced many commentaries compiled by commentators from different madhabs (sects) and reported some key information, especially about Persian and Shiʿite commentaries. He provided less rigorous information about some tafsīrs than others, though. He used a rich classification system while introducing the tafsīrs. He extensively used the basic sources of Ahl al-sunna and Shīʿa in the issues he addressed. While he criticized al-Dhahabī from time to time, he benefited a lot from him, particularly when introducing the tafsīrs, and he acted with madhab-related concerns while introducing some tafsīrs and commentators; but he hardly acted conservatively, regarding the issues he addressed.
