Summary/Abstract: The subject which concerns the relationship between space and the sphere of the religion is one of the most fundamental questions that have occupied the scope of the social sciences in the last few decades. In the presented article, an attempt is made to outline a research model for the study of the relationship space–ritual, based on phenomenological and structuralist interpretations. The following text gives a more general overview of the anthropological discourse on the subject of space as a social and cultural phenomenon. The leading analysis focuses on an attempt to trace the processes of sacralization and ritualization of spaces in Bulgarian folk culture, giving an example in which the two main principles of generating and implementing spatial symbolism are distinguished – functional-organizing and qualitative-associative.
