Summary/Abstract: The subject of the research presented in the article is the folk tradition of Christmas (Gody) in the Lublin region, in particular caroling, analyzed diachronically on the basis of the Tartu-Moscow semiotic theory. By distinguishing the basic structures of symbols realized during the celebration and comparing – on the example of the semiotization of the ritual space – the text and action of the Festival, was made an attempt at reaching the group of its oldest symbolic layers, captured as a fragment of the “primary text of the Gody” participating in folk cosmology. The conclusion that can be drawn from the reflections presented in the article is the relationship between the folk Gody Festival and the ancient solar and cosmogonic myths, which were the part of semiosphere of the reconstructed mythology of the Balto-Slavic horizon.
