Gender incongruence in ICD-11: a commentary

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this commentary is to discuss the ICD-11 in terms of changes that were made in the classification around gender identity diagnoses. The decision of the World Health Organization to remove transsexualism and create a new category under the name of gender incongruence in a section separate from mental illnesses and mental disorders, was long-awaited primarily by specialists in mental and sexual health, but also by patients experiencing their gender differently than resulting from how it was assigned at their birth. The text briefly discusses the changes in terms of content and language, as well as practical implications and the social impact.
