Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the changes of the image of “the other” in Serbian history textbooks that occurred from the period of the Balkan Wars (1913) until the reforms of the curriculum in 2010. It had been concluded that the image of “the other” almost completely depends on the needs of the present, in particular on the need of legitimization of a current regime. It is also significantly influenced by the politics of history, as well as identity politics, because self-image is created primarily through the image of “the other”. It was also said that the presentation of the past in history textbooks depends more on other bearers of memory than on scientific historiography, and that literature often has a greater influence than scientific monographs. Three periods have been shown: interwar Yugoslavia, socialist Yugoslavia and the period after the breakup of Yugoslavia. During these periods the role and the image of “friendly” and “enemy” peoples was almost completely changed.
