Summary/Abstract: The boundary between the genres of classical literary dramas and films has become obscure. The contemporary Asian film industries regularly adapt storylines and themes from literary works. This shift from one genre/medium to another has ‘glocalized’ Shakespeare all over the world. This film adaptation has led to various vantage points of the literary text being adapted in a diverse cultural, regional and generic shift. The research analyses the major allusions to the themes, dialogue, plot, and setting of the original drama Hamlet (1603) in the adapted film Hemanta (2016). It reviews the process of the deconstruction of the play through deviations from the original plot and its iconic characters. The article also discusses the quality of ‘intertextuality’ in the film Hemanta. Similarly, the article analyses the literary techniques of ‘dramatic motif’ and ‘metadrama’ in the play Hamlet and the adaptation of these techniques in the film Hemanta. The article also emphasizes the anatomizing perspective of the major iconic characters in Hamlet. The research article proffers the deconstruction of the classical play Hamlet, as well as illuminating the differences between the adapted film Hemanta and the original play.
