Summary/Abstract: "Sustainable" and "durable" are key terms in the current public agenda. In both the literature and policy documents they are used either synonymously or have different meanings. Using content analysis, carrying out an etymological incursion of the terms, and theses of the sociology of knowledge, the paper treats sustainable development as a lived reality, which resulted from an objective dimension (of external structures, of institutions as role systems) and a subjective one (of individual experiences), separable only at the analytical level.
