Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to depict the conceptual range as well as the exploratory and explanatory potential of the “modernization” category for the currently undertaken research on various aspects of changes occurring in the modern state, especially in public administration. A systematic analysis regarding the evolution of the theoretical approaches to the modernization phenomenon and a review of research positions is aimed at organizing the discourse in this field as well as presenting possible research areas that may draw on the theoretical achievements of modernization studies.
