Summary/Abstract: During the modernization period in the Ottoman Empire, which started with the Tanzimat Reform Era and continued with the Reform Edict, important transformations were experienced in the field of law, as in every other field. In particular, this transformation has occurred in prisons, which are characterized as places where prisoners are sentenced. In these rehabilitation works, it was aimed to improve the physical structures of the prisons, while at the same time improving the accommodation, nutrition and health conditions of the prisoners. Among the places where the rehabilitation works were carried out, the Ergani Mine Public Prison, which was accepted as a base for the execution of the labor penalty, was found. In this context, in this study, the presence of convicts and detainees, their accommodation conditions, health conditions, types of crimes they committed and their convictions in the prison between 1850 and 1920 were discussed. In addition, in the study, the reflections of the reform studies on prisons on the convicts and detainees were tried to be examined by making use of archive documents and copyrighted works.
