Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the mythological, cultural and semantic aspects of the snake, manifested in the theogony and mythology of some ancient peoples, as well as its meaning, in them. At the same time, a brief interpretation is given of its meaning from the aspect of Christianity, as well as its connection with the subconscious in man, according to Jung. At the same time, special emphasis is placed on its appearance in the material culture and folklore of the Balkan people and beyond, where it is usually represented in the form of a broken serpentine strip, zig-zag line or spiral shape. The appearance of the so-called “snake ornaments”, widely represented in the ornamentation and iconography of Neolith cultures, Rybakov interprets them as remnants of the ancient Indo-European cult of the snake, connected primarily with agrarian magic and fertility. The paper specifically analyzes those embroideries, part of Macedonian traditional ornamentation in which this type of motifs appear, classified and analyzed according to their iconography and semantics, as well as some ritual forms and beliefs, part of the traditional culture of the Macedonians.
