Summary/Abstract: Most fairy-tale characters inspired by Slavic mythology are almost unrecognizable in Russian fairy tales. Over time, Yoginya-Matushka turned into a scary Baba-Yaga, one of the most important characters in Russian fairy tales. Christianization, in its attempt to destroy the cult of paganism, forced people to change their worldviews and accept new beliefs. The appearance of many gods was changed negatively, and mythological characters were turned from positive deities into negative and hostile creatures. Over time, mythological characters transformed and became fairy tale characters. The article aims to describe the transformations that Yoginya-Matushka underwent until she became the fairy tale character Baba-Yaga.
