Summary/Abstract: After briefly reviewing developments in the application of quantitative methods in legal history and the present-day situation, the author elaborates the results of his own research. Using a quantitative method, the author attempts to study the content of acts of mortis causa disposal! in classical Greek law. He describes in general terms the basic stages of creating the experimental data bank and the ways of solving the problems within such stages, and more particularly in the coding and scaling procedure — which is a prerequisite for such an application. Factor analysis as one of the possible methods is then applied to data derived in the above described manner. Corresponding result show that the design of the data bank applied, makes possible the application of quantitative methods even in this kind of traditionalist academic field. Specific conclusion derived on the basis of the above analysis shows that the will was not a typical institution in classical Greek law, but that this were two other specific forms of the mortis causa disposal (which appeared here as two independent factors).
