Summary/Abstract: Globalization and technological changes – the processes that have smartened up in tandem in the last few years, are the basis for a new global economy set in motion by technologies, fueled by information and led by knowledge. The extension of this new global economy has major implications in the structure and purposes of educational institutions. As the information’ topicality is continuously reducing, and the extent of access to it exponentially increases, the educational system can no longer remain focused on transmitting an inflexible set of knowledge from the trainer to the learner in a fixed period of time. Thereby, Alvin Toffler says, “the illiterate of the 20th century will not be the one who cannot read or write, but the one that cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.”
