Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes Freud's method of exploring the unconscious: free perception linkage. The author believes that Freud had not reached the unconscious itself, because it in itself is inaccessible for the mind. But people know it through its manifestations: mistakes, dreams, works of art, repressed desires, etc., which are conscious manifestations of the unconscious. They include two kinds of elements – conscious and unconscious ones, and through analysis they can be separated so as to know the qualities of the one and the other. The second part of the text analyzes the role of censorship which is a supervisory mental authority whose action is aimed at checking desires. Its verification work is unconscious and sketchy with a tendency of excessive strictness. The text ends with the conclusion that along the path of becoming a member of society man has developed powers to suppress his animal instincts.
