Summary/Abstract: This text raises questions about the encounter between ethics (theory) and psychotherapy (practice), between the philosophical premises of practice and practice as the object of scholarly research. What is „missing” in the core concepts of classical ethics – Aristotle's view on virtue and well-being and Kantian ethics of duty and autonomy – in regard to the modern individuals and modern society? The ethics of today calls for a new understanding of reason bridging conscious and unconscious dynamics in individuals and society. What is the ethos taking shape in the practice of psychotherapy, and what is the rationale behind it? How can we be ethical while working with „the missing” we keep stumbling on?
