On religion without illusions

Summary/Abstract: Freud was a militant atheist. For him, belief in God was an infantile regression. Hostile as he was to religion, he nevertheless recognized it as an answer to man’s ontological anxieties. He hoped that, in abandoning religion, man would understand his true position in the universe as a mature being who faces reality. What he missed is that most people cannot bear much reality.
