Summary/Abstract: This study examines the relationship between the Cuban Catholic Church and the Batista dictatorship. It reviews the situation of the Church in the 1950s and outlines its dilemmas emerging after the coup d’état of 1952 and the guerrilla war started in 1956-57. The repression of the Batista regime reached the Catholics, too. The junior priests, the lay activists, and the common believers were involved in large numbers in the resistance movement, but the leaders of the Church were unable to reach a unified position regarding the regime and the revolution.
