Summary/Abstract: The author of the article describes an urban and regional “field of memory”. He analyzes female hodonyms, official forms of commemorating women in Białystok and female dendronyms in the Białowieża Primeval Forest, as well as acts of civic commemorations. On this basis, he discusses trends in local symbolic politics in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and compares them to the ideological assumptions of the Polish policy of memory. Using a regional perspective, the author highlights the disproportion between the past ethnic and religious diversity of Podlasie and the practices of marking public space and natural and cultural heritage by the dominant community and the institutions of the unitary state.
