Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the malfunctions of meat processing plants in Poland in the 1950s and 1960s; including the suffering of animals that ended up there. It is based mainly on documents stored in the Central Archives of Modern Records in Warsaw (especially in the files of the Supreme Audit Offi ce and the Ministry of State Control). The research focuses on the following issues: how animals were treated on farms; purchase points and transport to and treatment in meat-processing plants. New facts were also established with regard to their employees’ abuses and poor technical; hygienic; and sanitary conditions in the plants.
