Summary/Abstract: One of the consequences of Russia’s defeat in the Crimean War (1853–1856) was the visible political revival in the Kingdom of Poland. Numerous patriotic and religious demonstrations in the early 1860s forced the Russian authorities to seek ways to stop Polish political aspirations, for example, by imposing military and police rule. The first attempts to introduce martial law in the Kingdom of Poland and a state of siege in Warsaw were undertaken in March 1861 by Governor Mikhail Gorchakov
