Summary/Abstract: In the early modern period, the cooperation with the noblemen living within the town walls represented a serious challenge for the Hungarian and Transylvanian towns. The mining towns of the Metaliferi Mountains were less developed than the most important mining towns of the Hungarian Kingdom, but the presence of the nobility in these towns was noticeable here as well, especially in Abrud (Germ. Großschlatten, Hung. Abrudbánya). At the beginning of the 17th century the noble families, which had come from outside and gained hegemony, after ensuring their leading role, tried to reorganize the local economic life in their own image. Typically, they wanted to gain economic benefits with the help of the urban privileges, without sharing in the public burden. The leaders of the mining town tried to resist, enjoying support from the principal power, but they could not achieve a significant victory, because the precious minerals produced by the mine-owners was very significant for the administration of the Principality, so the principal commissions tried to find a compromise solution.
