Summary/Abstract: This article examines the German idioms with the verb schweigen [to be silent] and their translation into Bulgarian. The intention is to demonstrate the philosophical and cultural dimension of silence. This shows that the way of thinking in a culture and its perceptions about certain taboo topics crystallize in the language through idioms. The question is discussed on the basis of selected German idioms with the verb schweigen [to be silent] as a component and their Bulgarian equivalents. In conclusion, it is stated that in the German and Bulgarian cultures there are similar statements on freedom of speech and on certain taboo topics.
