Summary/Abstract: This paper consists of a cultural journey between Japan and Europe, based on the performance "The Scarlet Princess", created by Silviu Purcărete at Radu Stanca National Theatre in Sibiu, Romania. The production is a completely unique fusion of a traditional Japanese kabuki text and a contemporary European theatre style. Using the performance as case-study, the article tackles this connection from cultural, artistic, and technical points of view. It features fundamental elements of kabuki theatre and go into detail about their use, as well as about how they are part of the performance or have been translated on the stage. The information presented is based on the personal experience performing the main female role: Princess Sakura. The main intention is to bring forward how important this national cultural phenomenon is, in an international context. The paper also discusses the extent in which the Japanese traditional codes and significations have reached the varied audiences it has had.
