Summary/Abstract: The present paper analyses the attempts of producing a ”Thesaurus-Dictionary” of the Romanian culture from the point of view of the cultural national policies. We intent to establish the cultural and political context in which the idea of creating such a lexicographic document appeared, the setup of the institution appointed for such an achievement and its initial projects, and the reasons for their failure. The Romanian Literary Society, set up on April 1st 1866 and entitled The Romanian Academy since 1879, had three well-established linguistic objectives: to set the orthographic norms of the Romanian language and to draw up a grammar, and a ”Thesaurus-Dictionary”. Regarding the last objective, there were three attempts before the project that would become the most important lexicographic work on the Romanian language, which was started in 1906 by Sextil Pușcariu and was finished in 2010. The first completed project was done by A. T. Laurian and I. C. Massim (1971-1975) and was criticized because of the Latin orientation of the authors; the second project, assigned to B. P. Hasdeu stopped in 1893 because of its slow progress, while the third one, entrusted to Al. Philippide stopped without any published volume.
