The user manual of a device – a multipurpose textual support for teaching specialized language

Summary/Abstract: Among the authentic documents that can be successfully used for teaching / learning specialized language, the user manual of a device is distinguished by its flexibility and efficiency. We refer to the sequences regarding the description of the device and the related accessories, respectively to the instructions and precautions for use. In addition to the easy discovery of lexicon elements due to the association of the text with the image, these sequences allow contact with the grammatical and discourse structures specific to the presentation of a process with its unfolding, its causes, and consequences. This article reconstructs the structure and characteristics of the user manual, offering some illustrations regarding its integration into a Romanian language lesson as a starting point for teaching activities or practicing /reinforcing lexical and grammatical notions. The article starts from the distinction authentic document - pedagogical document (adapted), relevant for the real possibilities of didactic exploitation of a complex material such as the one that interests us.
