Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the importance of creating an inclusive teaching environment from the very first lesson as key to engaging and retaining students. The aim of this paper is to highlight the importance of connection and attachment in creating a proper teaching atmosphere in terms of psychological comfort and wellbeing. The first lesson focuses on creating a space of openness, acceptance and trust to which students develop class, peer and teacher loyalty and which in turn motivates them to actively participate in the tasks. Furthermore, the paper presents examples of activities carried out with year 1 students which help create connection and develop attachment among students and with the teacher during the first ESP class. The findings support the idea that attachment lies at the foundation of any relationship, university student-teacher included, that it helps foster loyalty to a group and that students feel more motivated to actively participate in all subsequent classes.
