Summary/Abstract: Book Review: Slavíčková, Pavla (ed.): Ženy-podnikatelky v minulosti a současnosti. / Women-Entrepreneurs in the Past and Present. Praha: Nakladatelství Lidové noviny, 2015. 294 stran. ISBN: 9788074225086 The book "Women-Entrepreneurs in the Past and Present" written by a collective of authors led by Pavla Slavíčková is both about women-entrepreneurs themselves and the changing environment in which women-entrepreneurs have featured over the last two centuries. If in the 19th century the woman-entrepreneur was an exceptional phenomenon, today it is nothing unusual. This transformation is a consequence of the emancipation process that commenced with the Industrial Revolution which initiated a massive population shift from rural to urban areas and dramatically changed the character of work so that many professions ceased to be "typically" female or male. The cultural change was further encouraged by the two world wars (during which women took on the jobs of men who joined the armed forces: it was no coincidence that universal suffrage for women was introduced immediately following the end of the First World War) and the Great Depression which severely weakened the cultural archetype of the man as the family "breadwinner". Moreover, ongoing deindustrialisation in the Western world, which is leading to a reduction in industrial employment positions typically occupied by men, is currently exerting a very similar effect.
