Summary/Abstract: The article traces the history of the social and cultural innovation of the braid (gaytan) at the end of the XVIII and the first three quarters of the XIX century and its social, economic and cultural influences on the chain of townships on the both sides of the Balkan mountains range (Gabrovo, Karlovo, Kalofer, Kazanlak, Sopot, etc.), and hence - on the reviving Bulgarian society as a whole. An attempt has been made to outline the reasons for the rise of this most dynamic economic sector during the long 19th century, as well as for its gradual decline after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1877.
