Summary/Abstract: For the development of the journalistic profession and the creation of quality content, the need for university education of journalists is indispensable. The theoretical part of the study describes the po-ssibilities and forms of journalists’ education in Slovakia as well as studies dealing with the motivation of university students to study journalism and mass media studies. The main goal of the study is to find out the current state of perception of the journalistic profession by students of mass media communication at the Faculty of Mass Media Communication of the University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava. Spe-cifically, we find out the opinion of students about the study of journalism, their motivation to study, and their expectations from studies and the profession. The results of the research indicate that the work of a journalist is still perceived as one that informs, enlightens, and helps the entire society.
