Summary/Abstract: The commentary characterises the potential impacts of the application of the candidacy programme of the new President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on the social policy of EU Member States. The commentary notes both the declaratory nature of the programme and the fact that the social policy terms of reference are neither clear nor do they have enforceable objectives. We can, therefore, expect the European Commission to continue to prioritise economic development and the subsequent further alienation of EU citizens from this organisation.
