Summary/Abstract: The study analyses the phenomenon of co-operation with the German occupiers, including a so-called “conscious collaboration”, in connection to a book recently published in Russia («It has happened. The Germans have come!» Ideological Collaboration in the USSR during the Great Patriotic War. Moscow, 2012).The study covers less studied issues, such as the everyday life of the population in the occupied territories and their relationship with the occupying authorities. This study attempts to clarify the dividing line between the acceptance of occupation and cooperation with the invaders. In this context, the author gives a brief overview of the debate among Russian political exiles about collaboration with Hitler. Finally, it examines in detail the background of the “conscious collaboration” and the impulses leading towards it, noting that the collaboration with the occupying forces – regardless of its motivations – ultimately led its representatives to political isolation and moral impasse.
