Summary/Abstract: The author claims that there would be no homosexuals if not for camp, and vice versa. The article can be treated as an example of the reclaiming trend quite common in American literature, which can be seen as a response to Susan Sontag’s Notes on Camp extended in time. Irritated with reducing camp to an aesthetic frisson, the author highlights its ideological weight. Political potential of camp which determines its identity is a result of dominant gender divisions. Camp is a weapon of the queer, whose power does not reside in the constant swishing of anything encountered in culture. The excess and highlighting of gender characteristics prove that meanings produced by the dominant order such as morality, nature, spirituality etc. are constructed. Camp is a code which allows queers to identify and communicate.
