Summary/Abstract: In recent years there has been an increase in the level of indebtedness across all sections of the Czech population, which has also affected the elderly. Senior citizens make up a specific group that is also often at risk of debt foreclosure. Many of them have problems with their debts and have entered such a stage of over-indebtedness that they are no longer able to meet their repayment obligations. In such cases debt foreclosure proceedings are implemented with respect to old-age pension income. The aim of this study is to verify that senior citizens really do make up a group at risk of debt foreclosure, to identify the reasons that lead to such a situation, to present an analysis of the various reasons and to suggest how the situation might be resolved. According to Czech Social Security Administration data, the number of pension recipients who received a debt foreclosure order more than tripled from 24,000 pensioners with such orders in 2004, to more than 75,000 in 2014. According to the established trend it can be expected that the debt of persons receiving a pension (not just the old-age pension) will continue to increase as will the number of debt foreclosures levied on pension payments.
