Summary/Abstract: On 27 May 2015 the 45th traditional conference of the Czech Demographic Society, this year on the theme "Longevity - a success of humanity" was held at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Charles University in Prague. The conference was co-organised by the Czech Demographic Society in collaboration with the Department of Demography and Geo-demography of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the Charles University, the Department of Demography at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics - University of Economics in Prague and the Czech Statistical Office. The conference was attended by a number of experts not only from the field of demography but also from other fields related to issues surrounding population ageing. It was clearly evident from all the contributions that hand-inhand with the extension in life expectancy there will be an increasing number of people living to relatively high ages. Therefore, society must prepare for the fact that population ageing is inevitable and perceive longevity as a success of humanity which brings with it the need to fully familiarise ourselves both with the processes linked with population ageing and the timely provision of care for the elderly.
