Summary/Abstract: The author argues that the changes, which happen on the labour market, could be the reason of acute and severe reactions, including asymmetric terrorist actions. Such a case is the story of the so called „New Red Brigades“ in Italy, which operated at the end of the 20-th and the beginning of the 21-st century. The „New Red Brigades“ declared that they will „stop shooting in the arms and legs of the State (police officers and military men)“ and that they start „shooting in the brain of the system“. It appeared that the „New Red Brigades“ consider the industrial relations experts being the „brain“ of the State. The terrorists murdered two university professors – Massimo D’Antona and Marco Biagi. They were top Italian and European industrial relations experts, architects of the reform of the Italian labour market (including the ideas of the „White Book“ of the second Berlusconi government). Also, they were trade union consultants and played a significant role in the moderation of the negotiations between the social partners and in the social partnership as a whole. That is why the „New Red Brigades“ declared officially, that the assassinations of Massimo D’Antona and Marco Biagi, were motivated exactly by their activities as industrial relations experts and advocates of the flexibility of the labour market. This paper gives a detailed enough description of the activities of the „New Red Brigades“ in the context of the Italian industrial relations. Special attention is paid to the issue of the trade unions as terrorist attacks targets.
