Summary/Abstract: In the introductory part of the article the dynamics of the immigration pressure on the southern border of Bulgaria and the structure of the immigration flow are examined in view of their importance for shaping the attitudes of the local population towards immigrants. Further, on the basis of information from empirical sociological research, the perception of the threats related to the presence of immigrants in the country is presented and analyzed. The focus is on security fears – fears of importing terrorism, organized crime, crime against local residents, transmission of diseases. The second group of fears under consideration is related to the financial burden on society, the possible impact on the labor market and the social security system. Subjective opinions are compared to objective realities.
