Summary/Abstract: Starting from the idea that female participation in debating and adopting legislation is recognised as a crucial right in the improvement of the quality of democracy and authentic political representation, this paper analyses the role of gender quotas as an instrument of ensuring female representation in the decision-making process of various states in the European Union. The global spread of electoral gender quotas is seen as one of the most important novelties in public politics in the last 30 years, and, at present, over a hundred states worldwide have adopted quotas to increase the number of women in national parliaments. In the context of this international tendency regarding gender equality, we analyse the experience of introducing legislative quotas in France and Poland, and to explore the possibility of adopting legislative gender quotas in Romania, after the best practices models from other states in the European Union.
