Summary/Abstract: In her essay „Why are Americans Afraid of Dragons?“ Ursula LeGuin explores the way the average American citizen puts himself against fantasy, fiction and imagination as a whole. He consumes only sterile genres without even a sprinkle of imagination and creativity in them as they cannot do him any harm. Pleasure is seen not as something valuable but as a sin because something can be of value only if it earns you money. People are afraid of fantasy because there is truth in it and it can make their entire life collapse by threatening everything phony and trivial in it. This kind of mindset leads to the repression of the human imagination and that can have dire consequences for the individual. LeGuin preaches that people must not give up on their imagination and must learn from their kids instead as they have no trouble telling reality and fantasy apart.
