Summary/Abstract: The Evangelical Church A.C. in Romania has a long tradition in terms of schooling. One of the constant concerns of the parishes was the maintenance of the schools, both in terms of financial background as well as employment of teaching staff. By assigning the pedagogical responsibility to the parish priests, an efficient organization of the schools in almost all Saxon parishes was achieved. Although the ubiquity of the Saxon school is a cause for praise and pride, there has been little concrete discussion about what and how was taught in evangelical denominational schools prior to their redefinition in the national era in the first half of the nineteenth century. Reading the schedule of the elementary school in Sânpetru, we inevitably recognize the pre-national purpose of the Saxon schools, namely to provide the premises for participation in worship and the accumulation of knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a household, as well as to facilitate enrollment in a trade school or pursue a career within the church, as an organist, teacher or pastor. The introductory study seeks to outline how the formation of youth for own ecclesiastical and community purposes wore over time confessional Lutheran, pietistic or even Enlightenment garments, eventually leading to the need to impose pedagogical methods in order to make the educational process more efficient.
