Summary/Abstract: The text presents the development of leather tanning craft in the towns of Gabrovo and Sevlievo after the Liberation of Bulgaria (1878) until the nationalization of Bulgarian industry in 1947. There are not only conditions for progress but also for specialization in the production of different types of leather in those towns. Both Gabrovo and Sevlievo tanners created their own associations with the aim of ensuring a better organization of production and its closer connection with the market.Uncertainty and the perspective of closing production forces many tanners to take measures to modernize it. Schools are being established to train personnel for the leather industry. The state policy for the encouragement of local industrial enterprises increases the number of factories, workers and modern machinery. The development of the leather industry in Gabrovo and Sevlievo over the centuries to its modern forms of production is a proof not only of sustainability, but also of the implementation of modern technologies and machines. The leather tanning is one of the few traditional Bulgarian occupations, which gradually transformed over time from a craft to a manufacture and reached the industrial stage in its growth. The leather craft is an important occupation not only of hereditary families, but also a profession of people who turn their interests to leather production.
