From Wealthy Peasant to Lublin Local Government Elite: Some Remarks on the Background and the Beginning of the Konopnica Family’s Social Career

Summary/Abstract: The text focuses on the origin of the Konopnica family, who was among the ruling elite in Lublin in the second half of the 16th and the fi rst half of the 17th century. It attempts to supplement information concerning the first known representative of this family, namely Jakub of Konopnica. The paper draws on hitherto unknown, and therefore not present in any studies, information contained in the Lublin municipal books. Information from this source indicates that the Konopnica family descended from Marcin Tomczyk,a rich peasant who lived in the village of Konopnica. Marcin and his family have already been examined at length by Małgorzata Kołacz-Chmiel. Now an analysis of the sources under study has revealed some more information about Jakub Konopnica’s wife. Only her name has been known so far, and thanks to the Lublin municipal books, certain facts about her family have been discovered. The text also poses a question relating to the credibility of the accounts according to which Jakub Konopnica grew wealthy through illegal felling in the forest which was municipal property.
