Summary/Abstract: The paper studies the composed and separated writing of words in the Croatian, Serbian and Bulgarian language. The emphasis is on the writing of nouns, and therefore, the material found within the orthographic chapters on composed and separated writing is described and analyzed. Bearing in mind that the problem is not only orthographic but linguistic, thus causing even more indecisiveness in writing, this paper highlights the basic normative issues in determining the principles and rules of writing nouns in the examined languages and the way the normativists solve the problem. The research uses comparative methods in exposing the similarities and specificities between the three languages when it comes to setting norms for these issues.Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that there is a minimal number of differences between the rules for composed and separated writing of nouns in the orthographic manuals of the three languages, but in essence the problem is solved in the same way. The biggest difference lies in the approach to solving the problem. The paper is based on orthographic rules set forth in the most recent orthographic manuals of the three languages – Croatian orthography, 2013, published by the Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics, Orthography of the Serbian language, 2010, published by Matica srpska and the Official orthographic dictionary of Bulgarian language, 2012, published by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
