Summary/Abstract: The research focuses on 28 Roman cognomens and their equivalents, used in the languages of Slavia Orthodoxa as official passport names. The researched anthroponyms are divided into several groups according to the type of the basic word from which a given personal name is coined as a part of speech, and according to the derivation method used. The main aim is to clarify the initial meaning of the Roman cognomen whenever possible. No additional extralinguistic classification about the canonization of the researched anthroponyms is done, because all of the examples represent the saints’ names, canonized by both the Orthodox and the Catholic church.
