Summary/Abstract: This article aims to analyze the debates held between April and September 2016 around the adoption of the Law on Restriction of Wearing Clothing, Covering or Hiding the Face, the so-called „Burqa Law“, drafted and submitted to the National Assembly by representatives of the far-right party – Patriotic Front. By studying the narratives made by the aforementioned political organization and experts, this work demonstrates how the topic of gender equality and sexual emancipation has played a significant role in imposing the idea of a national state in the imaginary political reality of Bulgarian society. However, the current situation, despite the heated argument surrounding this question, is viewed as a tactical reversal within the liberal discourse and not as a direct opposition to the liberal rule of law.
