Summary/Abstract: This text thematizes the world of/for elderly people with dementia. The main aims here are to outline the research field, to put the problem of dementia and identity and to sketch the inequalities among people with dementia and among those who are taking care of them. The key-hypothesis that are maintained here are: dementia has its social roots and circumstances; there are between the world of dementia and the world of “normality” many difficult to surmount abysses – cognitive, communicative, social-practical, moral; the identity of elderly people with dementia disperses but it is not totally erased – the quality of the care, significant others and the “resources” at their disposal are influencing this identity and holding its unity.
